sometimes i really hate how shallow my family can be.
one side of my extended family, to be precise.
so what if ruhui's a little chubby? she's a bloody nice girl, that's for sure. and you can see quan really really likes her, do you have a problem with a little bit of extra mass?? so what if kat didn't have very nice features? is that how you'd judge her? val's tubby, yes, but she's definitely better than before, and she's actually pretty healthy, always at the gym. what matters more? is it a sin for any of us to have an imperfect shape?
sometimes it seems like the family is some exclusive, snobby bitch clique back in school, the 'elites' or something, trying to place itself over and above the others. being better is always good, sure, but it might be nice to come back down to earth every once in a while. and it wouldn't hurt not to look down on them either. but i suppose that's human nature, to despise what we can't see as matching up to ourselves. still, it's kinda depressing.
it's hard enough to try and live up to high expectations with regard to education and behaviour, why add the pressure of having to look good as well? it's unspoken, but it's very strongly felt, and anyone can see that whoever enchants the most through shallow and surface charms is the most 'successful', whether deserved or not. personally, i'm tired of the pressure, but i can't resist it. just because most of our family is reasonably smart and good-looking doesn't mean that
everybody, in or outside of the family, has to be this way. some people just aren't fortunate enough to have good genes, or to have grown up in an environment where certain values and learning ethics are nurtured. and you know what? sometimes, they can be much nicer and more fun than those who are.
smile, look good.
dress well, to suit your presumably perfect figure.
be vivacious, speak with a honeyed tongue.
be educated, be informed, be articulate, be politically-correct.
anybody sick of this masquerade yet?
