winter sales here are on!! and despite my resolution to not spend money, i got myself a new knit coat (it was on sale at least) and am heading to the myers sale tomorrow! damn, my art supplies are so expensive, and i have
got to curb my spending now! good drawing pencils are like AUD1.45 here, which is hfjpwskkfhs expensive. cds too, AUD21 is considered cheap. there's a place called 'dirt cheap cds' where all go for AUD10, but there's only a small collection.
anyways, a lowdown on the classes i'm taking. first of all, there's my interdisciplinary, reason and passion: cultural paradigms. if it sounds cheem, let me say this now: it is. it's about the two opposing driving forces behind the creation of art, and how this view varied from classicism to romanticism, which means that we gotta learn about the great philosophers of these times, like plato, nietszche, blah blah.. interesting, certainly, but hell to try and read cos it's so DENSE. gah. doesn't help that i'm taking both spacelab and visualization, which eat time like nobody's business.
spacelab is about experimenting in art techniques, and for my first project, i gotta do a self-portrait
blindfolded. someone help me! i'm absolutely useless without my eyes! my drafts so far just look like the scratches of a parkinson's patient trying to draw with his toes. i had alot of laughs doing them, though, cos when i removed the blindfold, i found all the features like, off, and one ended up with three heads. kind of a humanoid cerberus. the tutor loved that one, for reasons beyond my comprehension.
visualizations is about visualizing your ideas and finding ways to translate them into reality. sound straightforward? you couldn't be more wrong. the major projact for this sem is to create a series of works based on the theme '...scape'. so we have to start off by coming with a concept for a diorama (a miniature scene contained inside a box, like we used to make with plasticine in primary school), and then translating it into paintings/sculptures/life-size installations etc. gurk. and each demands a minimum of 6 hours a week on practical ALONE. not counting the theory side. i'm dead. i should've left one for next term. finally, there's creative writing, which so far seems like the easiest to handle.
so far. argh. bitten off more than i can chew. but at the same time, i'm really enjoying myself. the city is beautiful, and the art side of all this, despite being difficult and tiring, really makes me happy XD the stuff we learn is interesting, too, and melb's a great place to sit and people-watch. there're all kinds here, from top hat-wearing goths to hello kitty jap girls, not to mention those neo-punks with foot-tall mohawks (i swear!) but the irritating thing is that the ang mohs generally don't like to talk to asians because they look down on us, which pisses me off cos that's just shallow and self-elevating.
anyways, on a brighter note, i dont have any exams!! hurrah for projects and sketchbook assessments! now when everyone's doing exams, i'll just be mucking around in the art studio all day. now
